LDS Prophet Asks for Donation for Refugees: Here is My Story

I have 10 minutes to write a post before I get my youngest up, but I want to share a small miracle. A few days ago I received a substantial check from my only affiliate on my website. It was an amount I was unaccustomed to and totally unexpected. I looked at it and thought, now what am I going to do with that money? We are at a moment in our lives when I didn't need it for food or clothes or Christmas presents.

The next morning I read the Deseret News article about the request from a living prophet of God, Thomas S. Monson, that we contribute to the LDS Humanitarian fund: "It is with great concern and compassion that we observe the plight of the millions of people around the world who have fled their homes seeking relief from civil conflict and other hardships," wrote the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the letter.

I watched the video in the news article from lucify.com showing the numbers fleeing for their lives or a better life and thought, "I had no idea this problem was escalating. I am living in a bubble. I sleep in a warm house and a comfy bed."And my heart was softened.

Pondering the Prophet's request I knew I would donate that check. I didn't have to question it. On Sunday my husband and I heard our bishop read with emotion the letter from the First Presidency from the pulpit. Later we discussed amounts to donate. He said, "How much do you want to donate?" I said, "How much do you want to donate?" He said, "I asked you first." We went back and forth like that. I told him my check. He wanted to donate more. Just like that, and we donated.

Yes, there are many causes we can choose to donate to. We may not be able to change the world, but we can make a difference for one person or one family. I believe as we donate, miracles will be magnified. May you each be blessed as you give.

Here are 40 ways you can reach out to refugees in your own neighborhood.

  1. Thank you for posting this. They did not read this in my ward yet, and so I did not know about it. We have donated now too.
