Trials And Tender Mercies

Over the past five years I've had several health issues that have made it difficult to exercise as much I want to. I'm naturally athletic, though most people don't see me that way. I've felt like a racehorse at the starting line, just waiting for that gate to open so I can run my race.

Thankfully after several years of searching and working with doctors and chiropractors, I am finally able to get out and walk in my neighborhood again. It may seem like such a simple thing to walk, but it is huge for someone who hasn't been able to. Someone who has run a marathon and several races in her past. I hate to say it, but running may be a thing of my past. At least in this life.

Starting with a walk around the block was quite humbling this past year. Then slowly increasing to 1, then 2 miles and eventually 3. Walking carefully, so as not to stumble and get injured again. Then because of another health issue, not being able to exercise again. Like a horse who has stumbled in the race and then is put out to pasture again and again.

For some of us our challenges in this life are physical. For others they are spiritual. Regardless, I know trials and challenges mold us and build our characters. They teach us empathy for others. Humble us. Cause us to spend more time on our knees praying to God for help, patience and guidance. But isn't it wonderful that he is there, always listening? We don't have to go through this race in life alone. I know it!

And when we humble ourselves, he sends others to help us. Friends or family that just happen to say the right thing. Or call at just the right moment. Or perhaps we read a talk or article that moves us or just makes sense. Coincidences? Hardly. Tender mercies, yes! God knows me and I am grateful for that knowledge.

My walk today around our beautiful hillside neighborhood was exhilarating. First, down to Main Street, then back up, then further up "the trail" to the waterfall and back home again. I feel fortunate and blessed, and had to share. Have a great day!

  1. Boy, this was a dose of humility that I really needed. All day long I've just been hemming and hawing about whether to sign up for a yoga class and whether to stop at the gym after work. I've consisently chosen the path of laziness when it comes to excercise.

    I completely forget that there are all kinds of people out there who would love to be able to run on a treadmill or lift a few weights or twist themselves into a pretzel - but who, because of illness or injury or disability, have no choice but to remain immobile.

    My health is such a blessing that I continually choose to squander. Thank you for posting this wake up call! And I'm so happy for you that you're getting back to where you want to be!!

  2. How appropriate that I read this first thing this morning. I've been hiking on my property every morning but today have an early meeting at Church for a monthly ladies Bible study. I can get in my 40 minute hike but it will be a tight squeeze. It's so easy to rationalize that I'll do it later but so often "later" doesn't happen. Thank you Valerie.
