Utah Case Lot Sales: How to Shop

Shopping Tips:
  • Review my Utah Case Lot Sales Price list spreadsheet and decide in advance what items you really need. Planning beforehand will prevent you from shopping on impulse.
  • Set a budget limit.
  • Only buy what your family will eat or use.
  • Stock up on the size your family can use before it goes to waste. A 40 oz. sized peanut butter in my family would go rancid before an 18 oz. one. And so would a gallon of oil, so I buy the 48 oz. size. Even though larger may be cheaper, it may not be the best one for you.
  • Realize that there will be some great November/December sales on baking items such as flour, sugar, brown sugar, powdered sugar, cake mixes, evaporated milk, etc., so you do not have to buy those items now unless you really need them. Plus there are more coupons then.
  • When I shopped at Macey's last year, they allowed me to break the cases. Meaning, if I only needed 6 of an item instead of 12, I could still purchase the 6 for the case lot price. This is helpful for those of you that have coupons. I don't know which other stores do this.
  • Saving a few cents on an item usually isn't worth it. However, if you can save .25 per can on 10 - 24 ct. cases that's a savings of $60.00!

That is awesome! I noticed last year at least at Dan's that you could pre-order what you wanted for the upcoming case lot sale. I didn't do it, but I think then you just go pick up your order and off you go! Has anyone done this?

I have not preordered, but let us know if you see it. Thanks!

Very relevant and useful information. Everything you need to know about food storage and more. Thanks for taking the time and research on the case lot sales! Very helpful as we purchase our food storage.

I love it when I don't have to re-event what someone else has done. Thanks for sharing. Do you by anychance do this in Excel and would you be willing to share it? I'd like to cut and past it into some of what I'm using.

Amy Jo: The newest list is in the box on my blog titled "Utah Case Lot Sales Price Comparison Fall 2010." There is a link in the box to the Google document. Best wishes!

Do they only do this in Utah? I live in So Cal.

Hi Anonymous. I have not heard of case lot sales in California. Ask the grocery store manager of your grocery store if you can get a discount for buying by the case. Best wishes.

Are you finding that Dry Milk is less expensive at the cannery or during store sales?
I'm trying to decide if I should wait and watch for sales or just get it now.

Daphne: The Dry pack milk is cheaper at the cannery.

I LOVE using your comparison list the whole year!!! Question, this says the list for 2011 will be available April 30, but that is after the sales, is that date correct or will you actually have comparison prices before the maceys sale? Thanks so much for sharing your hard work with us ( especially appreciate it because I have to travel quite a distance to shop at these places so having a pricelist for price points helps me tremendously.
